How to become a successful game developer

Join my big journey into the exciting world of gamedev!

Hello, my name is Gregg. Today’s my 45th birthday. And this is my first blog post ever…

Playing video games, reading about them and listening to game music has always been a huge part of my life. I even earn my living by localizing games into my native language. Board games, collectible card games, role-playing games, larps – love them all too!

So I’ve spent almost my entire life playing all sorts of games. I’ve decided to try my luck in designing and making video games. This is my plan and ambition for the upcoming years. I wish to join the world of independent game developers and have fun at it!

This blog is my birthday gift for myself. And my first step on this journey.

Will this blog instruct me on how to design great games?

First of all, I’m not going to lie to you – I don’t have a ready answer to this question as I am a complete (well, almost) beginner. But the main purpose of this blog is to record all the steps I take. To write down all the achievements and all the (inevitable) mistakes I will make on my way to reach this goal.

If I succeed, this blog will provide a sort of guide for people who’d want to follow my journey. Reading the archived posts should give you some idea what to do if you want to become a game developer. And point out the things to avoid. All based on my experiences.

Even if I fail to reach that goal, the content of this blog will be an invaluable lesson. Both for me and future wannabe indie game developers.

This blog is my diary, my step-by-step recording of this great adventure I am going on.

Is this blog about game development only?

No, not only that. I’m also going to talk about the games I play, review some game soundtracks and movies associated with games. Expect to find here coverage from various gaming events I’m going to attend. I will share my thoughts about the current trends in the gaming industry.

That said my main intention is to test different tools available to budding gamedevs. I’ll give precedence to tools that are available for free. Maybe some paid too. Then I’m going to share my experience from using those tools or applications, and finally listing the pros and cons of each one.

But ultimately it is you, my dear Readers, who will decide what direction this blog is going to follow.

Let me know in the comments if you prefer, say, more gameplay or more game soundtrack reviews. I’ll be sure to provide you with what you want, as long as it is fun for you to read and for me to write!

How frequently are you going to publish on this blog?

Frankly, I don’t know. Time will tell.

I do plan to publish at least twice a month (or every other week) for starters. But the frequency of posting depends largely on the amount of time I’d be able to devote to running the blog. After all, I need some time to intensely test, practice and learn the game development tools. And then write about it.

Every blogger needs a fuel for his writing. And that fuel is the comments and encouragements from his readers. Some constructive criticism is also very welcome. I certainly count on your kind reception of my awkward attempt to blogging. Thank you for your help along the bumpy road that awaits me.

The more attention I will receive from you, the more frequent and better content you can expect from me.

Can you start blogging already?

Shure-I-can! 🙂

I think I’ve already started. After all, what you’re reading right now is my first blog post. I’ve just made my first step on this journey. Thank you so much for accompanying me and please, visit my blog again, and keep your fingers crossed for me.

Because only together we can reach the goal and successfully enter the world of game development.

My name is Gregg. Today’s my birthday and a first day of the rest of my life with games…
